2007 The Athens News Wheels on Fire Skateboard Contest

 The
3rd Annual Wheels on Fire Skateboard Contest was held on September
29, 2007. There were over 70 participants and the largest
expert class ever. Morgan Burgess cleaned up in the expert
class winning first place and best trick. See the Events
page for full details on the contest. Thanks to all the volunteers
and skaters that helped make this year's event happen. Proceeds
will be used to help pay off construction costs of the park
and help offset maintenance and improvement costs.
The Lights are On!
The lights are finally on at the skatepark. The park is now
lit up until 11 p.m. every night and open to skate. Come on
out and enjoy the ambience and the cooler temperatures.
The Athens Rec Director put the funding
together to get lights for the skatepark, but we're still
accepting donations for continued improvements to the park.
Please send your tax deductible donation
to Athens Parks and Recreation, 701 East State Street Athens,
OH 45701. Make the check payable to Athens Parks and Recreation
and write Skatepark Lights in the memo. If you would like
to pay by credit card, call the Recreation Department at (740)
592-3325.

Looking for people to skate with? Want
to set up a road trip? Or, do you just want to talk with fellow
Athens skaters? Join the ASP listserve! To join, send a blank

and follow the directions that are e-mailed back to you. Once
you're signed up, send messages to skate@athensskatepark.com.
Interested in Helping Out?
Many volunteers work with the city to organize events,
maintain the park and plan park improvements. If you are interested in donating
money, materials or time please e-mail info@athensskatepark.com.
Some of the things we would like to accomplish in the next year include:
- Make improvements to the street area.
- Raise money for lights.
- Organize at least two events at the park.
