Athens Skate Park -- Events

The Wheels on Fire Skateboard Contest was held on May 13, 2006. Over 75 competitors showed up and there was a large crowd on hand to cheer them on. The event started with a noncompetitive novice jam. The kids were out in force and pushing their limits. Next up was the Intermediate class with Leif Wakefield taking top honors. Leif has been pushing hard in the last year and it showed. The Advanced class took the stage next and the skaters were going off. There was tons of talent in this division and the judging was very close. In the end Mark Davenport pulled out the win with stylish blunt to fakies and huge frontside airs in the pool. The Women's division was next. Halo Whitelight pulled off the win with very close competition from Nikki Jason. Julie Carpenter came in third. The experts closed out the day of competition. Brandon Martin was going off and, after numerous attempts, landed a huge transfer out of the eight into the six. Morgan Burgess pulled out his incredible bag of tricks and landed the best trick of the day with a frontside 540. Effort rider Moss Miller landed in first place with stylish lines that used the whole park, huge airs, tech tricks and a unique style.

After the competition was over Dirty Johnny and the Makebelieves took the stage and literally tour the roof off the place. During one of their first songs the canopy covering the stage blew off and they didn't miss a note. The Speedknobs powered through a set just before the skies opened up and ended the fun just before dark.
