The Athens News Wheels on Fire
Skateboard Contest
Saturday, September 29, 2007
The
Wheels on Fire Skateboard Contest went off on September 29,
2007. The weather was perfect and the skating was intense.
There were over 70 competitors in this year's event and the
level of skating stepped up from the previous two events.
Check out pictures from the event at http://www.skatepharm.
com.
Morgan Burgess pulled off a win in the expert division putting
together huge runs in the bowls and working the street course
with an assortment of ollie variations and ledge and rail
grinds. Kenny Coombs hauled down second place in the expert
division with incredibly smooth style, long grinds, tailslide
variations and roll ins on every wall at every possible angle.
Moss Miller took third expert with his unique blend of high
speed lines and signature tricks. Overall, the level of skating
in the expert division was incredible and really fun to watch.
The women's division was taken by Nikki Jason. Nikki put together
great lines, pulled front and backside airs in the 8' bowl,
did roll ins and generally ripped. Julie Carpenter snagged
second with high speed lines and general flow. Halo Whitelight
got third with nice frontside grinds and frontside airs. Special
mention for first-time competitors, Hope Davis and Megan Autrey.
Hope and Megan have only been skating for a short time but
are progressing very fast. Look out next year!
The advanced division showcased a number of local guys that
are making huge progress in their skating. John Witherspoon
won with inverts in the 11' bowl and lots of air variations.
Jasper Runco took second with high speed lines, roll ins and
nice double trucker grinds in the 9' bowl. Adam Chapman took
third with flowing airs over the hip, long standup grinds
and high speed lines.
The intermediate division was won by Aiden Greenfield. Ethan
Kola took second and Noah Preuss nabbed third. There was 27
competitors in the intermediate division and lots of these
guys are poised to move up next year.
Morgan Burgess won the Best Trick Award with a McTwist in
the 11' bowl. Dan Flueharty went big with attempts to land
an air over the gap from the 8' bowl to the 6' half. He won
the coveted Most Stoked Award. Ryan Mossberg won, once again,
the Best Slam Award. Ryan is a tough SOB! He takes slams that
would leave others in a pile. He just gets up and keeps skating.
A special award -- Missing in Action Award -- was given to
Leif Wakefield. Leif, unfortunately, broke his arm earlier
this year and was not able to compete. Leif is one of the
best local skaters and won the intermediate division last
year. He'll be back on his board soon and guaranteed to rip
in next year's competition.
Wheels on Fire is totally put on by volunteers and is a fundraiser
for the Athens Skatepark. Thanks to everyone that helped out.
